Due to its central location in the North East, Washington DC offers motorcycle riders a fantastic base of operations for exploring a vast number of roads and routes that highlight the area’s natural beauty and history. Read below for a small taste of the fun and excitement that awaits you!
Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park
This historic, 105-mile route takes riders on an unforgettable tour of Shenandoah National Park. Find beautiful vistas and historic landmarks as you wind through the park, and you’ll get views of Blue Ridge as well as plenty of woods, farmland, and orchards. You can see all sorts of wildlife, from white-tailed deer and black bears, to foxes, otters, and an aviary worth of birds — over 200 species of local and migratory birds, in fact, which makes Shenandoah one of the country’s best spots for birdwatchers!
There are plenty amenities, including modern accommodations along Skyline Drive at Skyland, including lodges with full service restaurants and activities. Bring a few bucks along for the ride, as you’ll need to pay a $25 entry fee per motorcycle and an additional $15 for every rider. The cost is certainly worth it, and the passes last seven days; you can even pick up an annual pass for just $55!
Back of the Dragon
Not just a famous route in the area, but one of the premier motorcycle routes in the whole country, Back of the Dragon takes riders on a thirty-two mile joyride filled with hundreds of curves and wondrous views of nature. This is a motorcycle riding experience that’s unmatched, with nature on display like you’ve never seen.
Travel Virginia Route 16, a two-lane ribbon that crosses three mountains from Tazewell to Marion lets you experience all the curves, switchbacks, and slaloms you love, while also plenty of elevation changes and limited access areas. This all comes together to make Back of the Dragon a true legend. Being a famous route, there’s no shortage of stop offs, restaurants, lodges, attractions, and planned events surrounding the area, so plan ahead and make sure you’re there for a taste of it!
